Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition affecting the face which typically causes persistent redness of the cheeks, long and uncomfortable skin flushing, pimples, skin thickening, and eye itchiness. It’s most common among fair-skinned women who are the ages between 30 and 50 years old.  Our team of Board Certified Dermatologists at Greenwich Point Dermatology in Greenwich, CT, are well-experienced in treating all different categories of rosacea, helping patients manage their discomfort and their complexion changes.

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is not yet known. There are, however, many common triggers that can cause flare-ups. These include:

  • stress
  • heat
  • sun exposure
  • alcohol
  • some cosmetic or skin care products
  • spicy foods
  • environmental factors such as harsh wind or bitter cold

During your appointment, our team can help you identify what your triggers are and how to avoid them.

What types of rosacea are there?

There are four main types of rosacea, each expressing slightly different signs and symptoms.

  • Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR): redness, flushing, visible blood vessels
  • Papulopustular rosacea (PPR): redness, swelling, and acne-like breakouts
  • Phymatous rosacea: swelling and bumpiness of the skin on the nose
  • Ocular rosacea: red, dry, irritated eyes with swollen eyelids
