What is Skin Fungus?

Skin fungus is an infection of the skin caused by a buildup of bacteria and fungal properties. These conditions are very common and are typically easily treated with topical or oral medications. Common fungus our patients should be on the lookout for include:

  • Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedi). Athlete’s foot causes peeling, redness, itching, burning, and blistering in the affected area. It’s most commonly contracted in moist, communal environments such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and public shower floors.
  • Ringworm (Tinea Corporis). This type of fungus appears as a circular, red, flat sore with scaly skin. It can appear anywhere on the body in patches or red rings of rash.
  • Yeast Infections (Cutaneous Candidiasis).  Yeast infections are caused when yeast on the skin becomes hyperactive. These infections can often create a red, scaling, itchy rash.
  • Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris). Jock itch commonly appears on the genitals, inner thighs, and buttocks as a red, itchy rash that can be ring-shaped. It’s more frequently found in warm, wet environments.

What does Skin Fungus Look Like?

Skin fungus may look different for each patient depending on the type of fungus it is and the severity of the condition. That being said, Dr. Dolder and her team typically ask patients to look out for scaly, red rashes that may be ring-shaped, especially if the patient is spending their time in warm, moist environments.  After performing a physical and microscopic exam, one of our dermatologists will diagnose your fungal infections and discuss treatment options. Depending on the severity of the infection, you may be treated with either topical or oral antifungal medications.

What Causes Skin Fungus?

Skin fungus is most commonly caused by exposure to a fungus in a warm, wet environment. That fungus then thrives and grows over time to develop into a skin condition. Skin funguses are very common among children and adults of all ages, especially those who are active.
